Historic Morgan House

The History of the Morgan House Restaurant

Peter Tonneliar, a retired banker from Benton Harbor, Michigan bought 52 parcels of real estate in Ft. Myers and lee County. He started developing the “Court”, now known as Patio De Leon in 1913. During the 2 years following, he erected most of the buildings in the courtyard, including the theatre known as the Ritz, which was located right next to this parcel of land. The Ritz burned down and this building housed some of the theatre’s most valued possessions for several years. History records reveal fond memories of social gatherings and old traditions of gracious hospitality. The beautiful patio provides a soothing backdrop for relaxing and entertaining. Our fountain located in the patio was once an alligator attraction and also a fruit /soda stand for many years during the 1930’s, it was redesigned in the 1990’s and again in 2010.

Our original location at the Dean Hotel, on the corner of First and Dean Street, has been a downtown landmark since 1923. When the opportunity to relocate the Morgan House a mere 150 feet from it’s present location, we embraced the idea to purchase and renovate this building, which lends a historic feeling to the already legendary hospitality of the Morgan House. The new location connects the patio’s present and past, providing a relaxing atmosphere for dining and new ways to experience our “Old Florida Hospitality with New Florida Flair”.

The Morgan House Restaurant is intentionally designed to be a casual place extending the experience of bringing together many aspects of the Patio’s convenient location. We have brought back to life this area’s historic purpose, making it a place for entertaining and socializing, just as it was a century ago.

The Morgan House’s catering and culinary professionals are now bringing our legendary hospitality to you. Let us take care of the details so you can enjoy your wedding; rehearsal; business or corporate function; or any other family needs!
